Ghouls Night Out at Carolina Memories

The ghouls were out on Halloween at Carolina Memories and customers got to pick a "trick" or "treat" out of a grab bag with freebies, discounts and more. We had both a black cat and the Cheshire Cat come to visit, as well as Wednesday Adams and a Hippy Love Child. Not pictured: The Glue Queen (AKA Christina in an evening dress with glue jewelry...)

Recent Arrivals... Part One...

Here's a glance at some of our recent arrivals... I'll post more later today or tomorrow!

Cosmo Cricket – The gorgeous new line features vintage-inspired, double-sided papers in heavyweight cardstock. We love that they have also done things to help you get your projects done QUICKLY. They have created pages with strips of multiple papers to create borders, lines, and titles. They also have pages with ready-made journaling blocks. Just journal, cut out the block, and paste it on your page. Really easy as well as beautiful! They also have adorable chipboard embellishments, stickers, and rub-ons. We expect lots of great things from Cosmo Cricket in the future, so we’ve given them a new display in our store.

Imaginisce – This company has made things for Bazzill for years, and now they have released their own new, hot scrapbook line. We have a selection of Imaginisce papers, but what really impressed us was their cool embellishments. We really love the new ribbon sliders, metal disks and jewel brads, and the oversized poinsettia flower embellishments they have created.

New Albums from Colorbok – Colorbok has added new stitched and patterned albums for fall, as well as some fantastic new pet albums. By and large, these are the best pet albums that we have ever een. And because they’re made by Colorbok, we know that we can count on the quality.

Holidays from KI Memories – The new Christmas and winter lines by KI Memories are flying out the door! In addition to the awesome “Color Lab” embellishment kits, the papers are a lot of fun. KI Memories has also added new papers that have strips of all their designs on them. You can cut out the strips to create borders, titles, journaling blocks, and add elements to your design. It’s very easy to add some pizzazz and get your pages done quickly.

New Books! – Recent arrivals include “Imperfect Lives,” a guide to scrapbooking about real life stuff, some of which isn’t cute or pretty. We also have three sketchbooks, the new “Distressables” book by Tim Holtz, and “The Artful Card.”

Vintage Ephemera – The letters packs by Crafty Secrets, which are inspired by vintage ephemera, are back in stock. They are perfect for heritage scrapbooks, as well as altered art.

McGill Punches – We will be expanding our punches offerings to include new punches by McGill and other companies. These are just the first of new offerings.

Ranger Paint Dabbers – We have them in all 36 colors! These cute little tubes of acrylic paint are SO EASY to use. You can “ink” stamps with them, apply paint to blank chipboard, and create all kinds of other artistic effects on paper – and all without mess or the need of a brush. These are just a few techniques you can do with these dabbers:

1 – streaked the edges of a paper with a dabber after painting and stamping the paper with other colors of the new ranger paint

2 – took a black piece of mat board and embossed a design on it with clear embossing powder. Then painted over the surface with a cream dabber and wiped excess paint off to create a “shabby chic” look.

3 – applied to the new Ranger Crackle medium

4 – plaid stripes on paper

5 – dots and dabs on paper

Chatterbox – We have all the new Chatterbox embellishments and a few more, such as the new ribbon packs, are on the way. Chatterbox has outdone itself with its new rub-ons, stickers and chipboard. Please come check them out.
American Crafts – We now carry American Crafts ribbon by the yard. These double-sided fibers are awesome for scrapbooking and cardmaking! They are very soft and have really fun patterns. We will also be adding new American Crafts pens, eyelets, brads and buttons.
LuminArte – We have all the new Twinkling H20’s colors!

The Report From Memory Trends

Memory Trends, the fall tradeshow where companies release their new products for the next several months, was a lot of fun. We played a little bit, but mainly, we spent several late nights writing orders. (Check out these pictures of our late night “booty call.” That’s Robin, better known as “BZ,” our assistant manager, and me, Christina, the owner of Carolina Memories, wearing my signature tradeshow slippers.)

We saw a lot of cool trends, and we just wanted to share them with you:

Black and white – Almost every designer seems to have a new black and white line and we are already getting some of these into the store, such as one beautiful new line from Creative Imaginations. Some designers were using their black and white lines, with red mixed in, for Christmas this year. It had a lot of “pop.”

Vintage, distressed and subdued – The vast majority of new papers seem to be taking a cue from lines like Signature Suite by My Mind’s Eye and Basic Grey. We love these lines and new ones such as Cosmo Cricket because the subdued colors and textures allow the photos on a scrapbook page to really stand out. We’ll also be receiving the new “Magnolia” line by My Minds Eye.

The “digital look” – Digital designers have influenced traditional scrapbooking by overlaying text and designs across photos on their digital pages. There are new generations of rub-ons coming out from companies such as Daisy D’s which have large titles and flourishes and are meant to be overlaid across an enlarged photo.

Clear stamps – It seems like every company is now doing their own version of clear, acrylic stamps with alphabets, doodles, flourishes and more. You can expect to see us bringing in a lot of these new lines! They are especially easy to use for scrapbooking because you can stamp a title on a page and see exactly where you are placing it.

Florals – The floral craze continues, although many stores are upset with Prima’s inability to ship them products in a timely manner. We ordered some of Prima’s new products (and will hope they get here eventually). Also, many new lines are adding paper and fabric floral embellishments, so we’ll have these coming into the store as well.

Chipboard – The use of chipboard to create slightly raised designs on pages is continuing. Since you can paint, glitter, or cover chipboard with paper, it is a very versatile embellishment. We saw chipboard becoming fancier and cheaper, and ordered several new product lines for the store.

Pets – Scrapbooking pets continues to be a popular trend. Many companies have responded with new scrapbooks and products for pets. We ordered many of them.

We will have limited crops during the holiday season. They will be held on Nov. 3 and 17, and Dec. 1, 15, and 29.

Crops last from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., and include dinner and demos of any new tools that have recently arrived in the store. Nov.-Dec. is the last snail-mail newsletter!

As our mailing list as grown to more than 4,100 customers, it has become unwieldy to print and mail the newsletter every two months. That’s why we’ll be changing to an e-mail newsletter in January.

In order to continue to receive notices of classes and news from our shop, we need to make sure that we have your correct e-mail address.

If you have never received an online newsletter from us, please give us a call at 919-493-8800 or send us an e-mail at carolina_memories@yahoo.com to make sure we have your correct e-mail address.

In addition to sending out our e-newsletter, we’ll post a printable copy of our newsletter on our website every two months, and paper copies of the newsletter will continue to be available at the shop.

Thanks for your help as we make this change!

And a note from Christina…

I just wanted to add a note to Ellie’s goodbye to say that I think she did an awesome job and she will be very much missed. We’re looking forward to having her come back to teach in the new year and still be involved in the store in other ways.

The first year has definitely been rough on us all, although at the same time, it has been very rewarding to create a store that has become a home away from home for many of our customers. We are looking hard right now at all aspects of our business, and trying to figure out ways to boost our sales in our second year, so that we can continue to be here for a third year.

Your support is essential for us to be able to continue to be here. If I didn’t truly believe in the self-nurturing and healing aspects of scrapbooking and paper crafts, I know that I could never work as I hard as I am working to build this new business. I just wanted to take a minute to thank all of our customers and encourage you to tell as many people about us as you can.

Thanks again and see you soon,
Christina Headrick, owner

Ellie leaves us as Manager…

Hi!

I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to Christina, the staff and customers of Carolina Memories for the amazing experience I have had over the past 1 1/2 years with the company. It has been a joy to get to know you, help you with your projects, teach you and learn from you. The adventure is one that I will always cherish.

Unfortunately, the decision had to be made for the health of the business to dissolve the position of Manager and thusly, I am no longer with the company.

While it came as a bit of a surprise to me, I understand and want the business to thrive. For those of you who know me, you will understand that I trust the wisdom of the Universe in this and know that it is a grand opportunity to create something new and valuable in my life.

I will be returning as a teacher and to lead workshops for the staff. I so hope to see you in upcoming classes. I will be applying to be part of the Design Team.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank all of you for your friendship and support. I will miss you and will think of you fondly.

If you wish to contact me, you can at ljacquescapon@yahoo.com. Please continue to support Carolina Memories. It is a fabulous store and I hope to see you there shopping (because you know that I will be!)

Lots of love,
Ellie Jacques-Capon
